My favorite holiday tradition is a Christmas tradition - I love that we sit and read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" every Christmas Eve. I also love the tradition at my mom's house that my sister and I each get to open one present the night before Christmas (still, even though we're all grown up) and we get new pajamas to wear that night.

This will be the first year my family will be breaking tradition as there are now too many little ones to make it possible, but my favorite tradition will always be waking way too early on Christmas morning and emptying out our stockings full of goodies while still in our pj's and having terrible bed-head. Yes, we've managed to carry on this tradition even though all of the original "kids" are adults now. This year we'll do stockings at dinner time when the fam can get together.

We do family gifts on Christmas Eve and I love it! It is always interesting to see what everyone gets each other. No wishlists allowed, we have to be creative!

My favorite holiday tradition...would have to be mittens on the Christmas tree. My Grandmother started it many years ago, she knitted all of the grandchildren mittens or gloves each year and hung them on the Christmas tree with a name tag. We weren't allowed to take them off the tree until after dinner and clean up were done. So we would peek to see what mittens belonged to what child. You never saw dishes get done so fast!

My favorite holiday tradition is that we break most of all the traditional traditions and do things our own way. We don't do feast, we'd rather have fun, easy snacks. This year we are opening gifts on Saturday instead of Sunday. Oh, we do take the kids to pick out new ornaments each year, that is pretty traditional.

Sharleen said...

Mine is not a holiday tradition, but it is a tradition, each year, going on 9 years now, we have a family anniversary party. We buy gifts for each other and my son and I decorate my daughters room, we have a blast filling balloons with different things, confetti- that was fun, toys- it is amazing what you can fit in a balloon and it not pop and we fill the room with balloons, and then my hubby brings in an excited little girl and we have a wonderful family anniversary.

One of my favorite holiday traditions is at Easter. We all get together at my folk's house and even though we're grown up we still have Easter baskets, and we still hide eggs. We're a lot more creative with the hiding now, we do sneaky things like take lightbulbs out of lamps and put an egg in there instead. We use plastic eggs for hiding since nobody can eat that many hard boiled eggs!

My favorite tradition is that the family comes together at the 24th of december... and then all will go as all the years before: From celebrating one birthday during brunch (yes, one in the family was born at the 24th ^^), going to the stress of wrapping the last presents, starting to put all the nice stuff on the tree (you can only do this here at the 24th not earlier ^^), having coffee and cookies alreday late in the evening, then some readings, some music, some singing, some poems... (kids are already getting nervous) ..and then presents! ^^ Dinner is always cold because we believe that nobody should work (not even in the kitchen) at his day... The whole day itself with its structure is my favorite holiday tradition :)

When the service is over, my family doesn't blow out the flame. We carry it down the street to my grandparents.
